Discovering the Spectacular Wines of Rioja

La Rioja — Wineries

We present a programme that will allow you to visit one of the finest wineries in Spain, where you can enjoy a tasting of their best wines. It includes accommodation in the very heart of the historic and cultural centre of Logroño, the perfect base for exploring the rich heritage of the capital of La Rioja, savouring the exquisite local gastronomy and, of course, visiting the winery.

The Rioja wine region

The Rioja wine region lies in the Ebro Valley, between the Ebro river to the north and the Sierra de la Demanda to the south, influenced by both Atlantic and Mediterranean climates. This geographical position, combined with its climatic conditions and soil composition, makes it a privileged region for vine cultivation. The vineyard area protected under the Rioja Qualified Designation of Origin covers around 40,000 hectares, spread across two districts with distinct characteristics: Rioja Alta and Rioja Baja. Average annual production is 250 million litres, of which 85% is red wine and the remainder white and rosé.

Classification by barrel ageing

Young Wine (Vino Joven)

Produced in the same year as the harvest, with no ageing or maturation process. Retains its primary characteristics of freshness and fruitiness.

Crianza

For red wines, the ageing period in oak barrels and bottles must be a minimum of two full years from 1 October of the harvest year, with at least one year in barrel.

Reserva

For red wines, the total ageing period in barrel and bottle must be at least 36 months, with a minimum of 12 months in oak barrel. For whites and rosés: a minimum of 24 months in total, with at least 6 months in barrel.

Gran Reserva

For red wines: a minimum of 24 months in barrel followed by at least 36 months in bottle. For whites and rosés: a minimum total period of 48 months, with at least 6 months in oak barrel.

It is essential to bear in mind that wine is a living thing and must be handled with great care — never shake the bottle under any circumstances. Each course of a fine meal calls for a different wine to accompany it. Learning to serve wine correctly is a ritual in itself that greatly enhances the pleasure of the tasting experience.
