About Prague

Entry Requirements

A valid passport with a minimum of 6 months remaining validity and a visa are required for entry into the European Union. EU citizens only need a valid national ID card, though a passport is recommended as it is more universally recognised.

Time Zone

The Czech Republic observes the following time zones:

Summer time (DST) UTC/GMT+2h (from last Sunday of March)
Winter time (STD) UTC/GMT+1h (from last Sunday of October)
Argentina −4 hours
Central America −6 / −7 hours
Spain Same time zone

Currency

The national currency is the Czech Crown (CZK). 1 Euro ≈ 25 CZK. Currency exchange is easy — there are many exchange offices and banks throughout the city, and any ATM will dispense Czech Crowns.

Shops & Payments

Some tourist establishments (restaurants, shops) accept euros. In most city shops and stores, payment must be made in Czech Crowns.

Shopping

Bohemian crystal, wooden toys, traditional handmade puppets and Czech garnet jewellery are among the most popular souvenirs. Puppets have been handcrafted from wood or plaster since the 18th century. For spirits, try Becherovka — a herbal liqueur with reputed digestive properties. Czech jewellery by JABLONEX is also highly regarded; look for bead jewellery, faux pearls and strass pieces.

Electricity

Voltage: 220V. Plug type is the same as in Spain (Type C/E).

Climate

Prague has a continental climate with an average annual temperature of 8–9°C. Winters are cold but relatively dry, averaging around 0°C. Spring starts cool and becomes mild and humid as summer approaches, reaching around 16–17°C in June. Summer is not excessively hot, averaging just above 18°C in July and August, though temperatures above 25°C are common. Autumn is mild and moderately dry, though November can be quite cold, averaging below 3°C.

What to Wear

Pack according to the season. Long clothing is always recommended. From November to February bring warm winter clothing. Comfortable footwear is advisable for sightseeing and excursions.

Taxis

Always agree on the fare before getting in, and confirm the exact destination. Avoid unlicensed taxis, which often take advantage of tourists.

Medication

If you take any medication, bring enough for the duration of your stay. In the Czech Republic, obtaining a prescription requires a full medical consultation.

Safety

Prague and other Czech cities are generally safe and peaceful. As in any tourist destination, take extra care with wallets, cameras and valuables on Charles Bridge, Old Town Square and in busy trams. You can enjoy the city at night without worry — it is a safe destination.
