Danube Valley and Melk Abbey

Daily, 1 November – 31 October
A day steeped in history: ancient legends, medieval castles, beautiful wine villages along the most scenic stretch of the Danube in Austria, terraced vineyards, monasteries, and the jewel of Austrian Baroque — the Benedictine Abbey of Melk. Heading north-west of Vienna, two stops are made: first the wine town of Krems, an open-air museum of medieval architecture renowned for its apricot spirits and liqueurs; then Dürnstein, a tiny valley village famous for the months that the legendary English King Richard the Lionheart spent imprisoned there. The highlight of the day is Melk Abbey, visited with a local guide. After the tour, lunch is served at the abbey restaurant or a nearby village, before returning directly to Vienna.
