Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp
Built in 1936 by prisoners, Sachsenhausen was the first concentration camp established after Heinrich Himmler's appointment as Reichsführer of the SS and Chief of German Police. The site was designed to be the ideal concentration camp and to serve as a model for all others. It also holds particular significance as it was the closest camp to the Reich capital, Berlin, and was used to train staff for all other concentration camps. Initially a camp for political prisoners, as the war progressed and antisemitism intensified, it began to hold Jews, prisoners of war, Jehovah's Witnesses and citizens from Eastern Europe. Around 200,000 prisoners passed through this camp until 1945, of whom 50% survived. When it was liberated between 22 and 23 April 1945 by Polish and Soviet soldiers, some 3,000 doctors, nurses and inmates still remained. Since 1993 it has housed the current museum.

Potsdam Excursion
To the southwest of Berlin lies Potsdam, the summer residence of Prussian kings. The palaces of Sanssouci, the New Palace, Cecilienhof and the vast park areas dazzle with the splendour of a bygone era. The centre of Potsdam is equally captivating, with its picturesque Dutch Quarter and the Russian colony of Alexandrowka with its traditional wooden buildings. We will cross the bridge where the CIA and KGB exchanged spies during the Cold War, and pass by the palace where Stalin, Churchill and Truman met to divide Germany. We will explore the historic centre, the Dutch Quarter and visit the Neuer Garten and Sanssouci parks, as well as the surroundings of the palaces that served for 500 years as residences of the Hohenzollern dynasty. Includes entry to Cecilienhof Palace, where the Potsdam Conference was held in 1945.
