Croatia has belonged to the Roman Empire, the Hungarian Kingdom, the Habsburgs, Yugoslavia, Nazi Germany, Yugoslavia again — and on 22 December 1990 it proclaimed its independence. In the referendum of 19 May 1991, 90% of voters declared themselves in favour of an independent state, and following a parliamentary decision in the same direction, President Franjo Tuđman unilaterally proclaimed independence on 25 June.
